"Understanding and Healing the Effects of Early Sexual Abuse on Childbearing Women" by Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus. Copyright 2004. 450 pages, paperback. The authors' primary goals with this book are to educate every interested group--survivors, their families, their doctors, midwives, nurses, doulas, psychotherapists, social workers, and other caring professionals--on the long-lasting damage sometimes caused by early abuse; to provide skills to survivors and caregivers to communicate effectively with one another; to develop strategies to help women maintain emotional wellbeing during childbirth and early parenthood; to help caregivers provide safe and appropriate care to survivors; and to provide mental health workers and other paraprofessionals with birth counseling techniques. When Survivors Give Birth will describe the approaches the authors have used successfully to enable survivors to have rewarding and empowering childbearing experiences. Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus, both DONA Founders, presented "The Impact of Early Trauma on the Childbearing Woman: How Birth and Postpartum Doulas can Contribute to Healing," as a general session at the 2004 DONA Conference. This session can be purchased on audio cassette. Please call the office to find out how.
