Director of Certification

Tara Campbell is a certified Birth Doula (2002), Birth Doula Trainer (2005), and Childbirth Educator(2003). She joins the DONA International leadership team with over twenty-three years of experience.

Tara is an accomplished professional in the field of maternal health, serving as the founder of Birthing Gently LLC since 2002, a Boston-based Birth Doula agency that specializes in high-risk births. With a background as an adolescent and cesarean section educator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, she has played a pivotal role in implementing the Family Centered Cesarean Section approach in collaboration with various healthcare providers.

Trained under renowned doula educator Penny Simkin, Tara has made significant contributions as a Birth Doula trainer with DONA International, where she has successfully trained over 12,000 birth doulas. Identifying a crucial gap in patient care, she initiated a volunteer Birth Doula program in collaboration with Mass General Brigham Hospitals from 2013 to 2024. This program paired newly trained doulas with patients who would otherwise lack support during their birthing experiences. In response to changes in Medicaid coverage for Birth Doulas, Tara has evolved this initiative into a Doula Collective aimed at serving Medicaid patients at Mass General Brigham Hospitals while also supporting emerging Birth Doulas in the Boston area.

In 2022, Tara’s agency was invited to participate in Mass General Brigham Hospitals’ United Against Racism project, which aims to provide equitable Birth Doula support for program patients.

Her primary area of interest as a birth doula lies in working with Maternal Fetal Medicine high-risk OB/GYN patients. Tara focuses on complex conditions, including congenital and structural heart disease, psychiatric illness, epilepsy, spinal disorders (such as scoliosis, spina bifida, SCI, and tethered spinal cord syndrome), cerebral palsy, placenta accreta, VATER syndrome, neuroblastoma, cyclic vomiting syndrome, and addressing issues of inequity and injustice related to women’s sexual rights and pregnancy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In her role as Certification Director for DONA International, Tara is dedicated to supporting newly trained Birth and Postpartum doulas and the organization in its entierty.

Residing in Boston, MA, Tara is a mother of five children and enjoys various hobbies, including coffee, doodle dog named Bubbles, volleyball, skiing, hiking, and running. Additionally, she is a member of the East Coast Challenger Club and spends her free time racing her car at the drag strip.
